When connected, another branching unit will be installed to give Kimmirut, Kinngait and Iqaluit the option to join. At Umiujaq, a branching unit exists to potentially connect nearby Sanikiluaq to the network. A portion of the submarine cable network is currently serving four Nunavik communities along the coast of Hudson Bay – Kuujjuaraapik, Umiujaq, Inukjuak and Puvirnituq. The Kativik Regional Government ( KRG) has revealed that the Eastern Arctic Undersea Fiber Optic Network ( EAUFON) project aiming to connect five communities in northern Quebec (Puvirnituq, Kuujjuaraapik, Whapmagoostui, Umiujaq and Inukjuak) that have been primarily dependent on satellite links will allow for extensions to connect to Nunavut. Singapore currently boasts connection to 26 submarine cables via three landing sites – Singapore, Katong and Sakra Island, while 14 new systems are currently scheduled to land in Singapore by 2026.

Plans are underway in Singapore to double the number of submarine cable landing facilities within the next ten years, according to the city-state’s digital connectivity blueprint. The first section, Genoa-Golfo Aranci-Pomezia-Palermo, will enter commercial operations shortly, while the further extension to Corsica in Bastia will be completed in the autumn. From the Ligurian capital, the cable continues southwards to Palermo from where it will proceed through the Strait of Messina and the Mediterranean Sea down to the Red Sea. Laying began in January 2023 with the branch to Sardinia (Golfo Aranci) and continued in February-March with the landing of the shore ends in Pomezia and Genoa. BlueMed is part of the Blue submarine cable project, built in partnership with Google and other operators. The MoU also provides for Sparkle to offer LPTIC additional services, as well as rights over the BlueMed to be further examined and detailed by the parties in view of a definitive agreement. Telecom Italia’s infrastructure unit Sparkle has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Libya Postal Telecommunication and Technology Holding Company ( LPTIC) for the deployment of a new submarine infrastructure connecting multiple landings in Libya to Sicily (Italy), and via Italy to Europe through Sparkle’s new private submarine cable system BlueMed. For its part, the IEX cable will stretch from India to the Middle East and Europe (via a landing in Savona, Italy). It is part of a system comprising two main cables: the IAX and the India Europe Xpress ( IEX). The IAX, which is expected to be ready for service ( RFS) by Q3 2023, will connect Hulhumale in the Maldives directly with Mumbai (India) and Singapore, with additional branches to five countries, including Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

The India Asia Xpress ( IAX) submarine cable system being developed by Reliance Jio has landed in Chennai (India). The EMCS project is supported by the governments of Australia, Japan and the US, and will be implemented with grant funding from the three countries. This is the first submarine cable connection for the islands of Tarawa (Kiribati), Nauru and the state of Kosrae ( FSM). The 2,250km EMCS system will connect four islands – Pohnpei and Kosrae in FSM, Tarawa (Kiribati) and Nauru – with a large-capacity optical fibre submarine cable. NEC Corporation has signed a contract with the FSM Telecommunications Cable Corporation ( FSMTCC), based in the Federated States of Micronesia ( FSM), BwebwerikiNet Limited ( BNL) of the Republic of Kiribati, and Nauru Fibre Cable Corporation ( NFCC) of the Republic of Nauru, for the construction, supply and installation of a fibre-optic submarine cable system called the East Micronesia Cable System ( EMCS).
